Ice cream stands across the Tri-Lakes region are opening for the season.
Tupper Lake’s Skyline Ice Cream opened Thursday afternoon and will be open daily (except Tuesdays) from 2 to 9 p.m.
The Pine Cone in Ray Brook opened Friday.
Mountain Mist’s Saranac Lake location is expected to open today, from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., with ice cream only. Other food will be available starting next weekend.
Jay Fogarty, owner of Mountain Mist, said they’re excited to see customers again, especially coming out of the coronavirus pandemic. The flavor for Mountain Mist’s opening day in Saranac Lake will be black raspberry. The ice cream stand added a new deck last year, and Fogarty said they’re hoping to start serving beer and wine later this summer. They’re not sure what sort of wine they’ll serve — Fogarty said they’re open to suggestions from the community — but they’re hoping to serve locally brewed beer from the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery and the Ray Brook Brewhouse.

Donnelly’s Ice Cream in Saranac Lake is expected to open Memorial Day weekend. The Mountain Mist location in Lake Placid is expected to open next weekend as well, from noon to 10 p.m.

New owner for Teddy’s
–
Teddy’s Ice Cream in Bloomingdale, which is under new ownership this season, is expected to open Wednesday. The hours at first will be 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends, but that may change in the coming weeks, according to new owner Vincent Wilcox.
The owner and operator of Teddy’s for the past three years, Steve Schmidt, sold the business to Wilcox earlier this year. Wilcox, a fishing guide and fly maker, owns Wiley’s Flies on state Route 86 in Ray Brook. He’s also a business partner with chef Matt Fleury, who runs the ADK Street Eats stand next to Wiley’s Flies.
Wilcox said he knew there were different people looking at buying Teddy’s for different reasons.
“I’m from Saranac Lake, and I wanted that ice cream stand to keep it a local ice cream stand,” he said.
Teddy’s has been a Bloomingdale mainstay since the early 2000s. Wilcox said the business will still be called Teddy’s, most of the previous crew will be returning this season, and the menu will have a lot of the same offerings, with some new items.
“We’re doing some different things. A lot of people were under the impression that Matt would be out there. That’s not the case,” he said. He laughed, noting that he’s sure a lot of people are disappointed about that. Fleury is helping him develop some recipes, though.
“We’re adding a lot more new desserts and different food items,” Wilcox said.
Asked what kind of new items people might see at the stand, Wilcox offered a little sneak peek.
“Homemade ice cream sandwiches,” he said. “We’re going to make the cookies ourselves and the sandwiches ourselves. I’m always a fan of pie. I always thought an ice cream stand should have pie.”
Wilcox said he’s excited to see how things all come together this season. With most of the crew coming back, he said it seems like Teddy’s has been a fun place to work.
“It seems like everybody is really excited to get back there,” he said.
