Another Essex County resident has died after contracting COVID-19.

The resident, whose death was confirmed by the Essex County Health Department on Friday, is the second county resident to die after contracting COVID-19 this week, and the third person this week between Essex County and neighboring Franklin County.

The health department did not provide details about the person, where they were from or how old they were. The department, which has cited federal privacy laws, hasn’t shared those types of details since the start of the pandemic.

This latest death brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Essex County to 27.

As of Friday, 28 people across the county were in isolation with active cases of COVID-19, according to the health department. Seven new cases were identified on Friday. Franklin County logged four new cases on Friday and discharged 17 people from isolation. Franklin County had a total of 154 active cases of COVID-19 on Friday. The number of new cases found each day has been declining recently.

The coronavirus vaccine rollout continues. As of Friday, the Essex County Health Department alone had administered 1,732 coronavirus vaccine doses. Altogether, about 17,312 vaccine doses have been administered to Essex County residents, according to the department. The health department is just one organization offering vaccinations to residents in certain eligibility categories. Pharmacies, hospitals and state-run vaccine clinics have also been part of this historic vaccination effort.

As of Friday, about 16.5% of Essex County residents were fully vaccinated. More than 30% of county residents have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, according to the county health department.

In Franklin County, about 29% of the population had received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine as of Friday, according to the state Department of Health. Of that, about 16% of the population — or 8,201 people — has been fully vaccinated.

Hamilton County, south of Franklin, has the highest concentration of vaccinated residents in the state so far with more than 50% of residents having had been administered at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine. Hamilton County has the oldest population per capita and has the highest percentage of residents with disabilities, meaning more of the county’s population was eligible to be vaccinated early on. Since the county doesn’t have a hospital or pharmacy, the county health department has done the bulk of vaccinations.

Across the state, about 21% of the population had received at least one vaccine dose as of Friday, according to the state DOH. About 10.7% of this state’s population has been fully vaccinated.
