LAKE PLACID — Saranac Lake’s Origin Coffee is poised to launch a second location in Lake Placid.

The new coffee shop will replace Bliss & Vinegar on Main Street, across from the Olympic Speedskating Oval. The shop will open for the first time sometime next month.

Jennifer Jubin, the owner of the Bliss & Vinegar cafe, announced on social media Monday that she was closing the storefront to focus fully on her herbal and garden studies.

Origin Coffee owner Jecinda Wilson hopes the new location in Lake Placid will be a gathering place — when the pandemic has been contained, that is. Until then, the shop will be open for pick-up.

“It’s far enough off the really busy part of Main Street that we hope we will appeal strongly to the local community there, and be more of a destination for people seeking excellent coffee, community and food,” she said.

Wilson said she hopes the quality of the coffee will draw some visitors from outside the area, too.

The baked goods, breakfast foods and beverages on the menu in Lake Placid will be the same as in Saranac Lake. The coffee will be the same, ethically sourced from Coava Coffee Roasters in Portland, Oregon.

“You want to know, as a consumer and a customer, that your money is going toward something that is supporting a global effort,” she said. The coffee is sourced from smaller farms, where farmers are paid well for their work. Coava invests in its producers’ farms, which in turn allows them to upgrade their farms.

“We share some of that story with our customers; at the same time, it was just something that was extremely important to me,” Wilson said.

The Lake Placid location may stay open later each day than its Saranac Lake counterpart — and later than any other coffee shop in Lake Placid, for that matter. It may be open as late as 8 or 9 p.m. on weekends. Wilson said they’ll play it by ear for the first few weeks.

“We are also considering getting a beer and wine license,” she said. “That’s something different from what we offer in Saranac Lake.”

Origin has been a popular staple in Saranac Lake since 2015. The shop was a labor of love for Wilson, who outfitted the space with a coffee bar and tables made with trees from a family farm in Cadyville. This second location will largely see the look of Bliss & Vinegar kept intact.

“Jennifer, who owned Bliss & Vinegar … she just did the most beautiful, most thoughtful layout and design of that space,” Wilson said. “Her feel is very consistent with our brand and our Saranac Lake location. A lot of Jen’s work is very sentimental in the same way that some of the stuff in Saranac Lake is sentimental to us. It’s just so well, beautifully done.”

Starting at $4.75/week.
