A rafter of turkeys struts through the undergrowth in Bloomingdale. A group of turkeys is called a “rafter,” but the reason why is debatable. It may come from the Greek word “taphar,” which means “to sew,” or the Arabic word “raff,” a woven structure, and describes the way turkeys “weave” their way through the trees when spooked.
