LAKE PLACID — Two local businesses are looking to expand their outdoor dining areas.

The owners of Ere’s Pizza on Main Street, and the Simply Gourmet/’Dack Shack restaurants on Saranac Avenue, are seeking approval from the North Elba-Lake Placid Joint Review Board to expand the businesses’ outdoor dining areas.

The owner of the combined Simply Gourmet and ‘Dack Shack restaurants, Holly Healy, is looking to close off a short road directly in front of the building, which connects its two parking lots. The road would be converted into greenery, with a stone walkway through it, according to Michael Bird, an architect with Adirondack Design working on the project. The owner also wants to build a 763 square-foot deck extension, according to the site plan, as well as a new 400 square-foot enclosed entrance to Simply Gourmet.

Simply Gourmet, the ‘Dack Shack, Big Mountain Deli and the Base Camp Cafe and Camp Cocktail are all owned by the same company, Eat Simply. The 2099 Saranac Avenue building that houses the ‘Dack Shack and Simply Gourmet was once a Howard Johnson’s. Lake Placid’s Howard Johnson’s was among the last of the iconic restaurant chain’s locations to close in 2015.

The review board took no action on the Eat Simply request Wednesday.

The owner of Ere’s Pizza, Esad Cecunjanin, is looking to build a second deck for outdoor dining above the business’s existing deck, which overlooks Mid’s Park. A new staircase is expected to be built to connect the two decks.

Michael Migliaccio, a managing member of The Haus hotel, submitted a letter in support of the project.

Ere’s Pizza opened its outdoor dining area in 1999, according to a Lake Placid News article published on July 16 of that year. The deck existed prior to that and served a restaurant there before Ere’s opened. Cecunjanin and his family have owned a number of other restaurants in the area throughout the years. They’ve owned another Main Street restaurant, Jimmy’s 21 Ristorante, for 30 years.

Cecunjanin’s request to build a second deck was approved by the review board.

At its meeting Wednesday, the review board also approved a request from Jardeen Sargeant, the owner of a new juice bar called Canoes Juice, to install a new sign.

Starting at $4.75/week.
