TUPPER LAKE — A Massena man who robbed Ray’s Discount Liquor & Wine store in June has been sentenced by the Franklin County Court to 20 years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision.
Jason Smith, 40, had entered Ray’s at 9:45 a.m. June 29 and held 90-year-old Mary Chapman, who owns the store with her husband, at knifepoint. She had just returned from the bank with cash. Smith led her through the store and stole money from the register and bank box before fleeing on foot. Security cameras recorded the stickup.
Chapman was unharmed but shaken up from the experience, according to her daughter Tina Bradley.
On July 8, Smith was arrested in Massena in connection with an unrelated robbery in Plattsburgh in December 2017. He was charged in the Plattsburgh incident with third-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies; he stole property from a Plattsburgh residence valued at more than $1,000, according to State Police records.
After being released from Clinton County jail, he was remanded to Franklin County Jail and charged with the robbery in Tupper Lake.
State Police charged Smith with robbery in the first degree, grand larceny in the third degree, menacing in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
