Trump’s federal resignation agreement affects over 40K in state

And thousands in northern New York

President Donald Trump on Wednesday extended a broad paid resignation agreement to federal workers, offering seven months of pay in exchange for an agreement to leave their jobs by the end of September.

Under the agreement offered, which doesn’t seem to qualify as a “buyout,”‘ federal workers who aren’t in the Department of Defense, border and immigration security or the USPS were asked to agree to leave their jobs by September, and in exchange be paid through to that date with no job responsibilities in most cases, and no requirement to return to the office. Trump separately has ordered all federal workers given permission to work from home to return to their nearest agency office, even in cases of jobs that have been granted remote-work privileges since the position was created.

According to data from the federal Office of Personnel Management last updated in December of this year, there are over 53,000 federal workers in the state of New York, and just over 41,000 are employed by agencies eligible for the buyouts.

Those include agencies like the Department of Transportation, the Department of Commerce, as well as the Office of Personnel Management itself and the White House Office of Management and Budget, which oversees federal spending. Data does not specify agency-level employment at the local level, but Office of Personnel Management data indicates there are about 8,263 federal workers including military, USPS and immigration and customs workers in the 21st Congressional District, and about 7,872 in the 24th Congressional District in New York. Both totals are estimates and may be lower or higher than the true number by at least 1,000 people, according to Office of Personnel Management data.
