If we take away the tax breaks, further drilling would be limited by the oil companies. The windfall profit would limit investors. To do nothing would have us remain in the same boat of dependency. Remove state and federal taxes from consumer usage for the average American. Add lost tax revenues to the profit margins of the oil companies. I think more empasis, real tax breaks for those of us who would like to seek alternative resourses - solor, wind, etc

For years, the oil companies have been a bigger threat to America's standard of living than the Taliban will ever be.

It's not surprising you got an 80% poll result favoring punishing the oil companies when you construct a poll question to beg a desired answer. Note that most comments posted were not in favor of hitting the oil companies with penalties but pointed out that the problem of high energy prices is mostly the fault of government policy. Any Senator or Congressman(woman) who has and is opposing drilling offshore and in Alaska should be tossed out of office. Most of the same people have opposed nuclear energy generation. Our oil dependency has been created by their phoney environmental positions catering to radical "green" voters. The environmental risks of nuclear energy and offshore drilling don't approach the risk to our economy from dependency on OPEC. You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting the nonsense that the oil companies are to blame for the gas prices that are draining consumers pocket books.

We all want to be NIMBY's and then complain about the price of gas. Face it: we can't have it both ways!

Why do we need to feel sorry for the oil companies? They are making zillions, and they arent going to create any jobs in the Adirondacks. Hopefully they arent going to drill here and now either.

Drill here. Drill now. Stop sending hard earned American dollars to terrorist nations. Obama and Pelosi are fighting hard to NOT drill here in the US in hopes of keeping the supply low and the price of oil as high as possible. Then when we vote in November we all vote for a "change". It's brilliant politics, and we are the pawns. Shame on us for falling for it.

Oil company profit is 4%, and for that they explore, drill and deliver. Government on the other hand charges 15% and for that they do none of the above. GOVERNMENT is the problem, NOT the oil companies.

It's sounds backwards, but we need to encourage big corporations with more tax breaks in the hopes of making more jobs. Heavier taxes will only drive companies away.

It amazes me that a majority of people believ believe that by punishing the oil companies by tax law will in anyway help the energy crysis we are in. Back in the early 70s whenn were in an oil shortage the government decided to step in and it failed miserably. In fact the regulations did in fact cause the shortage. What the government needs to do is move us in a direction to get off the fossil lfuel bandwagon. Also oil companies make about an 8 percent profit on their product while government makes about 15 percent on that same profit by tax. So then what incentive does the goverent have in moving us off fossil fuel.
