COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting his father as the two exchanged gunfire inside the upstate New York home they shared.
Local media report that Michael Buck was sentenced this week in Otsego County Court in Cooperstown.
The shooting was early on the morning of Sept. 21 at the Bucks' home in the neighboring town of Middlefield. Authorities say Buck got into an argument with his 64-year-old father, Joseph, and started firing a .45-caliber handgun at him.
Officials say the older man retrieved his own gun and fired at his son before he was fatally shot. Michael Buck was wounded in the hand and mouth.
In June, he pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. He was originally charged with second-degree murder, assault and criminal use of a firearm.
