On Sunday July 27, at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, the orchestra will present "The Fork in the Road" at 7:30 p.m., with all seating reserved and available through the LPCA box office, 518-523-2512 or online at lakeplacidarts.org. The cost is $25.
The featured guest artist at this concert is pianist Sara Davis Buecher, who will perform Ravel's "Piano Concerto in G." Buechner enjoys a vibrant international performance and recording career as a musician of "intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess" (New York Times), "fascinating and astounding virtuosity" (Philippine Star), and "thoughtful artistry in the full service of music" (Washington Post). She established her early career as winner of a bouquet of prizes at the world's great piano competitions, including the Gold Medal of the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and a Bronze Medal in the 1986 Tschaikowsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. Recently, she has performed with the CBD Radio Orchestra, Orchestra London, the Montreal Chamber Orchestra and recitals worldwide, developing a particularly strong following in Japan.
Buechner's recording of piano music by George Gershwin was selected as a Recording of the Month by Stereophile magazine; her 1997 world premiere recording of the Busoni version of Bach's "Goldberg" Variations was profiled in the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times; and her recording of Hollywood piano concertos by Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman won Germany's Deutsches Schauplatten Preis for best soundtrack. Pro Piano has released her CD of the complete piano music of Stephen Foster, and her recordings of piano and chamber music by Rudolf Friml and Dana Suesse for Koch International (E-1 Entertainment) were greeted with great acclaim. Ongoing projects for that label include a multi-volume Bach-Busoni retrospective and a recording of the piano music of American composers Ray Green. Buechner's extensive discography also includes more than 10 disks for the Yamaha Disklavier and Piano Soft systems.
In addition to the Ravel, the concert program includes Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3," a sextet for horns and strings by Beethoven, and a movement from John Adams' "Chamber Symphony."
