JAY - A local resident has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl.
Ray Brook-based state police said the incident occurred in the home in Jay where 25-year-old Adam C. Vanvalkenburg lives. Police said at one point the girl tried to escape, but Vanvalkenburg held her back, preventing her from leaving.
Police arrested Vanvalkenburg at 3:43 p.m. Friday and charged him with first-degree sexual abuse; forcible compulsion, a felony; and second-degree unlawful imprisonment, a misdemeanor.
Vanvalkenburg was transported to the Jay Town Court, where he was arraigned and ordered to stay away from anyone under the age of 18. He was remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date. He remained in jail as of mid afternoon Monday.
