The Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society will host the second program of its 2014 "Odds and Ends" Winter Lecture Series on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Howard Johnson's Restaurant in Lake Placid.
The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. with attendees encouraged to come for dinner at 6 p.m. This program in the four-part series is titled "Adirondack Living" presented by Joe Orefice and Mike Farrell.
Joseph Orefice is an assistant professor in the School of Natural Resource Management and Ecology at Paul Smith's College. This portion of the presentation will discuss shifts in agricultural technology over the last 200 years as drivers of modern agricultural practices. It will also draw parallels between historic farm practices and current sustainable farming alternatives.
Orefice is a core member of the forestry faculty and is also involved with sustainable agriculture education at the college. Concurrent to his work at PSC, Joe is a Ph.D. student at the University of New Hampshire with a research focus in silvopasture, an agroforestry practice.
Michael Farrell serves as the director of The Uihlein Forest, Cornell University's maple syrup research and extension field station in Lake Placid. His presentation will focus on the history of maple sugaring and current developments in the maple industry. It will highlight major trends in the production and consumption of pure maple products and explore how the industry has evolved in the U.S. and Canada since the 1800s.
