SANTA CLARA - Firefighters from across Franklin County and part of St. Lawrence County battled a major structure fire Friday night in this tiny hamlet east of St. Regis Falls.

The former Santa Clara Lodge, located on state Route 458, was ablaze.

The fire was reported at roughly 6:20 p.m., according to Franklin County Emergency Services.

A person who answered the phone at the St. Regis Falls firehouse at 10:30 p.m. said volunteers were still at the scene trying to put out the blaze.

Around 1 a.m., the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross issued a press release saying it had helped two adults, who lived in the former lodge, with food, clothing and winter clothes. The Red Cross said it also helped them replace glasses and medications, and gave them "comfort kits."

No additional information was available.
