Children raise funds for books

January 27, 2014
Adirondack Daily Enterprise
Summer Cranker, Galen Halasz, Schuyler Cranker, Olivia Marocco and Oliver Halasz, Saranac Lake Home School Students, are shown with the banner they created for their Reading Challenge project to benefit the Saranac Lake Free Library. Jasper Wiech, who also participated in the project is not in the picture. Olivia Marocco came up with the idea after reading the library book “Kelsey Green, Reading Queen” by Claudia Mills. Halasz suggested to friends that they do their own Reading Challenge to help them read more books and to make some money for the library. The plan was that they negotiate with their parents the pledge amount for each book read in November 2013. “We had a lot of fun,” Halasz said, “since we all love to read.” The six children read 266 books and recently donated more than $290 to the library. The children also submitted suggestions for books to order to library director Peter Benson.
