LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls hockey team turned in an inspired performance Thursday night after listening to a pre-game speech by two members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.

Buzz Schneider and John Harrington spoke to the Blue Bombers in the locker room and the Lake Placid players responded with a 2-2 tie of Potsdam. The Sandstoners handled the Blue Bombers quite easily two weeks ago with a 39-11 shooting advantage in a 3-0 victory.

"The girls were inspired to play a great game," said Lake Placid coach Sandy Huber. "The team's hard work paid off. I'm really happy with our improvement."

After battling through a scoreless first period, Lake Placid broke through at the 7:59 mark of the second for the game's first goal. Jayde Dukette took a pass from Lizzie Bimonte and Kiana Fell to connect on the short-handed tally.

Potsdam answered three minutes later when Ally Miller scored a power-play goal. The Sandstoners took a 2-1 lead toward the end of the period with a short-handed goal by Megan Plumb.

Dukette evened the game at 2-2 on a pass from Morgan Meyer 11:19 into the third. Neither team was able to muster a goal from there on.

Tanner Stanton played well in net for the Blue Bombers, stopping 29 of the 31 shots she faced. Lake Placid had a total of 23 shots in the game.

Huber said that seniors Alexa Whitney and Emily Godin played exceptionally well in their senior game.

Schneider and Harrington were part of the U.S. men's hockey team that upset the Soviet Union on the way to winning a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid.
