N.Y. plans open houses at Adirondack camp Santanoni

January 15, 2014

NEWCOMB (AP) - The state Department of Environmental Conservation is opening a historic Adirondack great camp to the public for three weekends this winter.

The first open house at Camp Santanoni in the Essex County town of Newcomb is scheduled for the upcoming Martin Luther King holiday weekend, Jan. 18-20. The others are on Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 15-17, and on the weekend of March 16-17.

There's no motorized access to the camp in the state Forest Preserve. Getting there in winter requires a nearly 10-mile round trip on cross-country skis or snowshoes.

Built in the late 1800s, Camp Santanoni once consisted of more than four dozen buildings on 12,900 acres including a working farm, the Gate Lodge complex, and a huge rustic lodge and other buildings on Newcomb Lake.
