SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls basketball team notched its second straight victory, topping Plattsburgh 45-33 Monday in Northern Basketball League Division I action.

It was the first league win for the Red Storm, who improved to 4-3 overall. Senior point guard Jenny Ward led the way, scoring a game-high 18 points despite being called for three fouls in the first half.

Although they trailed from start to finish, the Hornets, who replaced five starting graduated seniors from a season ago and fell to 0-8 overall with the loss, kept things close through the entire first half.

Clinging to a 20-18 lead at intermission, Saranac Lake started to pull away in the third quarter and then grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game at 34-24 when Ward connected on the front end of a one-and-one five seconds into the fourth period. The Hornets answered with a 7-1 run to cut their deficit to 35-30, but the Red Storm responded with a 7-0 run of their own to pull away.

Four other players got on the board for Saranac Lake. Katie Buckley and Selena Baillargeon each dumped in nine points in the win, while Katelyn Hewitt added seven and Megan Moody chipped in two.

Buckley again was a force inside the paint and also knocked down three nice jump shots, including the game's lone 3-pointer. She joined Ward as two key Red Storm players who got into foul trouble. Buckley was whistled for three in the opening half and played sporadically after intermission following her fourth foul early in the third quarter.

"We cut down on the fouls in the second half and did a nice job taking care of the basketball," Saranac Lake coach Frank Johns said. "We had a good all-around game rebounding and had a good game defensively. I think all our girls did a great job tonight."

The Hornets found some success in the first half with their full-court press, but had their own share of struggles handling the ball during the game.

"We couldn't hold on to the ball and we didn't do well on the boards," Plattsburgh coach Brad LaValley said. "When we did get those turnovers, we gave it right back to them or we just couldn't put the ball in the basket. We gave them too many second chances tonight."

Ashley Marlow paced Plattsburgh with nine points and Shea Frady was the Hornets next highest scorer with seven.

After defeating two less experienced squads in its last two starts, Saranac Lake will face a tough test in its next game Wednesday on the road at Saranac Central. Plattsburgh's next contest is also on Wednesday at Peru.
