TUPPER LAKE - The Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department will expand its coverage area starting Jan. 1.

Following a public hearing on Dec. 5, the Santa Clara town board unanimously approved a five-year contract that would extend the fire department's coverage into the southern end of Santa Clara along Fish Hatchery Road.

To cover those services, the town will pay the village of Tupper Lake $43,000 in each of 2014 and 2015, $44,290 in 2016 and 2017, and $45,618.70 in 2018.

The new area will not include the Keese Mills Road, Bay Pond area, which is covered by the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department, and the Tupper Lake fire department will not be responsible for water rescues.

The Tupper Lake village board unanimously approved the contract during Monday's meeting.
