CHAMPLAIN - The Saranac Lake girls basketball team opened Northern Basketball League play Wednesday night with a 67-27 loss to Northeastern Clinton.

The Cougars outscored the Red Storm 19-5 in the first quarter to take early control of the game. Saranac Lake fought back in the second quarter but NCCS pulled away with a 21-6 third.

"We had too many turnovers and a lack of offense and rebounds," said Saranac Lake coach Frank Johns. "Northeastern Clinton was very quick down the court."

Selena Baillargeon led the Red Storm in scoring with eight points, including two 3-pointers.

Kayla Carder was the game's top scorer after hitting for 22 points to go along with 13 rebounds for the Cougars. Teammates Emily Sample and Shaylyn Rowe each scored 10.

Saranac Lake, which opened the season with two non-league wins over Tupper Lake, fell to 2-1 with the loss.
