SARANAC LAKE - A lack of offense was evident in Saranac Lake's regular season opener Tuesday as the Red Storm fell 58-20 to Northeastern Clinton in their first Division I game in the newly-formed Northern Basketball League.

Although they turned in an improved performance from their 67-18 non-league loss to Malone over the weekend, the Red Storm still suffered from a slow start. The Cougars surged out to a 28-8 lead at halftime and pushed their advantage to 30 points by the end of the third quarter.

Eight players scored for NCCS, which had an overwhelming size advantage in the paint. Jon Filion paced the winners with 17 points and teammate Adam Khater chipped in 10 points in the win.

Devin Cowan led Saranac Lake with 11 points, which included two baskets from three-point range.

"The boys and I know it's our offensive end where we have to get better," Saranac Lake coach Dermott Morgan. "Our biggest problem right now is scoring points. Defensively, we are getting better, but we had some lapses there that cost us.

"That's a good Northeastern team we played, but our kids hung in there and kept swinging," Morgan added. "The kids worked their tails off, but we just played a better team."

Carl Bevilacqua was Saranac Lake's next highest scorer with six points.

The Red Storm will be at home again Thursday to host Northern Adirondack.
