Ice Palace builders look for help

November 9, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

SARANAC LAKE - The volunteers who build the Winter Carnival Ice Palace every year jokingly refer to themselves in union terms as the IPW (Ice Palace Workers) 101. This union is not a closed shop, and this winter it's looking for new members well before it's time to cut ice.

They invite anyone who's interested in helping, but maybe never knew how to get involved, to join them at a question-and-answer social gathering from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Captain Cook's Bar & Grill, 65 Broadway.

Natalie Leduc, a well-known third-generation Saranac Lake resident, chats with Jeff Branch, a fifth-generation Saranac Laker on the shore of Lake Flower at the site of this year’s Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace. Natalie shared a few stories of the fun of volunteering many years ago to help build the palace. Branch presented Leduc with an IPW (Ice Palace Workers) 101 vest to thank her for supporting the palace workers.
