To the editor:
The Ecumenical Council of Saranac Lake is supporting a fall campaign for the collection of funds to support UNICEF. UNICEF stands for the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It is at work in more than 190 countries, including the U.S., and provides immunizations and clean water and food to children, along with education, HIV/AIDS prevention, malaria prevention, emergency relief and much, much more.
UNICEF is funded entirely by private donations from individuals and non-governmental organizations. Since its inception in 1946, UNICEF has been an effective voice for children worldwide and in some cases, in some places, one of only a few voices advocating for children.
One popular UNICEF fundraising campaign is coin collection boxes in conjunction with Halloween. The idea is that children here collect coins to help other children who are in need. The Ecumenical Council is supporting this effort by distributing these boxes to local schools, churches, Sunday schools and businesses.
If you are reading this letter and would like to participate in this effort, I would be happy to provide you with coin collection boxes. Please write to me in care of the Council at email@example.com with "UNICEF" in the subject line.
Thank you very much for participating in this wonderful project.
