CANTON (AP) - Officials at St. Lawrence University in northern New York say the steeple at the university's stone chapel will have to be taken down for safety reasons after it was damaged by fire.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. Sunday in 87-year-old Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Part of the charred steeple fell off in high winds early today. University officials say no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say it was likely an electrical malfunction.

Officials say the chapel's 12 large brass bells weren't damaged. The bells play every day.

The chapel is used for formal assemblies as well as religious services. Its stained-glass windows depict historical figures including Emily Dickinson and Gandhi.
