Lake Placid welcomes 250-plus outdoor writers

LAKE PLACID - More than 250 professional outdoor communicators from all over the United States will be in town this weekend for the Outdoor Writers Association of America and New York State Outdoor Writers Association combined annual conference.

The conference runs from Friday through Monday. Organizers say its attendees have been eagerly anticipated since the OWAA selected Lake Placid as its annual meeting location in 2011.

"The Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau and Olympic Regional Development Authority staff has been working with organizers on the logistics for years now, as is typical for a conference of this scope," Maryjane Lawrence, Lake Placid CVB director of sales and marketing, said in a press release. "The attendees will be busy; professional development conference sessions will be held at the Conference Center at Lake Placid, but there will also be a demo day at Heart Lake, a shooting day at Heaven Hill Farm and a reception at the Wild Center."

Conference attendees include newspaper, radio, television, photography and video media professionals whose focus is outdoors topics, ranging from fishing to hiking to rock climbing to hunting.

"This conference is a perfect convergence of meetings/group and the leisure travel markets, and a great opportunity to showcase the very thing that drives leisure travel overnight visitation to our region: the outdoor recreational activities," CVB Director of Communications Kim Rielly said in a press release. "In addition to exploring the spectacular setting of the conference itself in Lake Placid, some of the attendees will experience, and ultimately promote, more of the Adirondack region's outdoor paradise as they participate in a variety of guided outings before and after the scheduled meetings, too."

Interested non-members are invited to participate in the conference agenda. OWAA is offering a free, half-day workshop titled "Becoming an Outdoors Communicator" from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Conference Center at Lake Placid.

Organizers said the workshop is an opportunity for anyone who thinks outdoor-related communications may be for them but doesn't know where to start and how to be successful. No experience is necessary, and there will be time for questions and answers. Organizers are asking those interested in attending this free workshop to preregister at owaa.org/2013conference/agenda/boc-workshop.

Workshop participants are also welcome to attend OWAA's three-day conference as a guest. After signing up for this free event, learn more about the entire conference at owaa.org/2013conference/about or call OWAA headquarters at 406-728-7434.
