SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake boys soccer team kicked off its Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season Friday with a huge win, edging Northeastern Clinton 2-1 at Schroeter's Field.
Seniors Devin Cowan and David Cluckey notched first-half goals to lead the Red Storm past the defending Division I champions. Cowan scored just 3:07 into the contest to lift the hosts to a quick 1-0 lead.
Nick Leduc scored for NCCS at the 24:03 mark to tie the match, but Cluckey pushed the Red Storm back in front for good with a goal 3:02 later.
Both Saranac Lake tallies were unassisted.
The Red Storm outshot the Cougars 14-10. Oliver Holmes earned the win in net with nine saves. Brady Vassar recorded 12 stops in goal for NCCS.
Lake Placid 2, Willsboro 0
WILLSBORO - The Lake Placid girls soccer team blanked Willsboro 2-0 on the road Friday in Division II action.
Taylor Barney gave the Blue Bombers an early 1-0 lead on a goal with just one minute gone in the match, and Liza Marinis sealed the win on a tally with 30 seconds remaining on the game clock.
Lake Placid dominated in shots, holding a 25-7 advantage in the contest.
Laura Stanton made five stops in goal to earn the win for the Blue Bombers, and Stephanie Blanchard recorded 16 saves in a losing effort in goal for the Warriors.
Adele Jesmer and Carissa Kennedy each picked up an assist for Lake Placid, which returns to action Tuesday at Elizabethtown.
