Rita Blanche Chiasson, 99, of Tupper Lake, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, at Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake.
Born March 6, 1914, in Ste Alphonse Caplin River, Quebec, she was the daughter of Paul and Charlotte (Roussy) Poirier. The family moved to Tupper Lake in 1921.
For several years Rita was a cook in the lumber camps. She went on to work at Sunmount VA and later Sunmount DDSO as a developmental aide, retiring in 1970.
In 1988, the Tupper Lake Woodsmen Association named her Woodswoman of the Year. Mrs. Chiasson was well known for her baking of homemade bread, donuts and meat pies.
She is survived by two daughters: Lucille Levesque of Tupper Lake and Theresa Boisvert of Concord, N.H.; two sons: Raymond Chiasson and his wife Mary of Claremont, N.H., and Mark LaVigne and his wife Suzanne of Tupper Lake; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Laeticia Poirier of Potsdam.
She was pre-deceased by one son Norman (Babe) Chiasson; one granddaughter, Pauline Dewyea; two great-grandsons: Pete Boisvert and Matthew Girouard; three brothers; and five sisters.
Calling hours are scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper?Lake.
