Forest rangers are searching the High Peaks Wilderness today for a 58-year-old Larry White, a Canton man who went missing while hiking on the Northville-Placid Trail.

State Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman Dave Winchell said White was reported missing at 9 a.m. today after he didn't reach his destination as scheduled. White started hiking on Aug. 7 in Lake Placid and was supposed to have arrived in Long Lake on Wednesday. White last signed a trail register near Duck Hole Sunday.

Forest rangers are searching log books and lean-tos in the vicinity to try to determine his whereabouts. Searchers are also using a helicopter.

White is described as a large man who is about 6 feet, 5 inches tall. He has one good eye, glasses and a scarred face in the mouth area.
