WESTPORT - The body of a Vermont man who went missing after jumping into Lake Champlain Monday was pulled out of the lake Monday evening.

State police divers recovered the body of Michael L. Mindell, 39, of Shelburne, Vt., from Lake Champlain at about 6:15 p.m. Monday in Westport, near the Palisades Cliffs.

Mindell was boating with friends Saturday when they pulled up near Palisades Cliffs, according to state police. His companions told police Mindell climbed to a ledge about 150 feet high, jumped into the water and didn't return to the surface.

State police were aided by the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Westport and Port Henry fire departments in conducting a grid search of the lake, which is estimated to reach more than 200 feet deep, for more than two days.

Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw responded to the scene and authorized Mindell's body to be taken to AMC Saranac Lake, where an autopsy was scheduled for this morning.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at 518-873-2750.
