To the editor:
It seems like the goose population in Saranac Lake has exploded this year! The school board voted down a plan to kill the geese a year or two ago. They also voted to change the name Redskins to Red Storm. I don't think they are listening.
The Redskin name had to go because of complaints. From the people I talked to and letters to the editor, it seems to me that most people favored keeping the name Redskins.
The geese plan was shot down. Most of the people I have talked to approved the killing of the geese. We could do as Michigan did and freeze them and donate them to food banks. (This was told to me by a ranger at a Michigan campground.)
It is way past time that elected officials do their job. It seems like they are running popularity contests when it comes to making decisions. You are elected to do what needs to be done and forget about popularity. In this country, there are other ball teams with the name Redskins. There are also states that kill the geese when they are a problem. (Note: I said kill, not cause them to pass away.) The board's answer was to buy a super-duper goose pooper scooper - what a joke that turned out to be.
So today as you squish through the grass at McKenzie's, the old beach on River Street, Lake Colby ... remember to thank the school board for making this all possible. At this rate, think what the goose population will be in five years or so.
