Local youth arts instructors are excellent

To the editor:

It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child.

Today my younger daughter will graduate from Saranac Lake High School. She is planning on attending Emerson College to major in stage and production management. Her mother and I are, of course, very proud of her hard work and accomplishments. I am writing to thank the members of the arts community who have had such a profound impact on the raising of my daughters.

Thank you to the faculty and staff of the Saranac Lake Central School District, especially the music educators and the administrators who have maintained funding for and preserved the tradition of excellence in music programming in the face of ever-challenging fiscal environments. For both of my daughters, the music program in Saranac Lake has shaped their aspirations for their adult lives. We are exceedingly fortunate to have one of the pre-eminent music programs in the state right here in our own school district. From the elementary level through high school, these educators, past and present, have shared their knowledge and passion for music in teaching our children to be first-rate musicians. Thank you for your gift to our children. I know mine will treasure it always.

Thank you also to the larger arts community. Along with the music program in school, our girls have been benefactors of the efforts of so many in the arts community. Throughout their childhood years, my daughters have been steeped in music, dance and performance opportunities. It is easy to take these resources for granted, but they are the result of countless hours of effort by passionate and enthusiastic members of our community. I include in this not just the music, dance and theater professionals, but also my fellow parents who volunteer so much to allow the show to go on. Many communities do not have the offerings in the arts available to the children in Saranac Lake. I think our children are richer for your efforts.

Though, I suppose, one never finishes raising a child, our younger child's graduation seems a fitting opportunity to reflect and thank the arts community of Saranac Lake for giving our daughters so much of your time and talents.

Most sincerely,

Terrance Kemp
