Sammy G. Simmons Sr., 70, died suddenly at his home in Tupper Lake on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
Sammy was born on June 22, 1942, in Alva, Mississippi to Sam and Goldie Simmons, who predeceased him.
Sammy graduated from John Rundle High School in Grenada, Miss., and Sammy's high school years were dominated by his love of sports: playing football, baseball and running track for the Grenada Bulldogs. Upon graduation from high school, Sammy proudly served his nation in the United States Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War. Sammy retired from Georgia Pacific in 1994.
Sammy moved to the Adirondacks in 2004 and was known for his thick Southern accent and charm. His hobbies included gardening and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Simmons. In additional to his wife, he leaves two sons: Sammy G. Simmons Jr. (wife, Linda), of Tupelo, Miss., and Joseph M. Simmons of Saranac Lake; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Simmons of Saranac Lake; and three much-loved granddaughters: Miranda Simmons of Oxford, Miss., and Savannah and Megan Simmons of Saranac Lake.
He was predeceased by two children: an infant daughter in 1966 and Sonya Michele in 1983.
