LAKE PLACID - It's not final yet, but it looks like the new elementary school principal may be coming from Hamilton, in central New York.
District Superintendent Roger Catania said Friday afternoon that he can't comment since the committee that conducted interviews is still getting ready to make a recommendation to the school board.
"That hasn't happened yet," Catania said. "While the process is ongoing, I can't really comment on individuals or where people stand in that process."
But a news website in central New York ran a story Thursday on Hamilton Central School elementary teacher and soccer coach Brian Latella leaving to become principal at Lake Placid Elementary School.
The story, on Radio Free Hamilton's website, calls Latella one of HCS' most successful coaches and one of the most successful small-school boys soccer coaches in the state.
Latella told Radio Free Hamilton the Lake Placid school board is expected to approve his appointment next week.
According to the story, Latella has worked at HCS as a fifth- and sixth-grade teacher since 2001, coached two class D championship teams and one runner-up there, met his wife at the school and had their two sons at the local hospital.
Latella told Radio Free Hamilton that he will miss Hamilton and HCS, but he's excited to become an administrator.
Catania said a recommendation from the committee will likely be made at the school board's next meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
He said he looks forward to being able to talk more when the school board approves the recommendations.
The new principal at Lake Placid Elementary will replace Javier Perez, who announced in April that he'll leave at the end of this school year to become high school principal in the neighboring AuSable Valley Central School District.
