Turtle transport

May 10, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

A large snapping turtle stopped traffic on Slater Avenue in Saranac Lake Thursday afternoon. The turtle, which had apparently come from nearby Brandy Brook, was trying to cross the road but wasn't able to climb an embankment behind NBT Bank. Billy Andronica unsuccessfully tried to lure the turtle into a backpack before Christian Whissler, who lives nearby, showed up with a snow shovel. The two men were able to get the turtle into the shovel and relocate it to a safer area near the brook. A group of children from the nearby Kids R Us Preschool and Daycare Center watched the rescue operation.
