Many Saranac Lake signs break current code

March 23, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

Just a reminder of the village zoning board meeting on Thursday, March 28, at 5:30 p.m. for public discussion of the sign code. Any business with a window sign larger than 2 square feet (2 feet by 1 foot) would be wise to attend. The initial issue of whether a vinyl decal applied to the outside of the window meets the sign code is no longer the center of this discussion. On a casual stroll through downtown, I noted very few businesses whose window signs did not exceed the code size limitation.

The three businesses that have been cited for violation have window decals that are a contemporary technique and professionally designed. They advertise a community service, a medical practice and a graphic design business. There is nothing in content or presentation that is offensive or distasteful. While they may be signs, nothing in the 15 pages of the sign code governs their use.

Also on my downtown walk, I counted more than 35 beer signs in our family-friendly community. Some of these are in violation of the sign code because of their size.

The village sign code needs review, revision and updating. Enforcement does not reflect its intent "to protect and promote the public health, welfare and safety."

If your business is in violation of the code, please attend this meeting. It takes only one anonymous complaint, and your business can be cited. And if you have concerns about village sign code relevancy and enforcement, please attend.
