Caring people returned handbag

March 20, 2013

To the editor:

In this day and age, people are the first to complain about something but not too inclined to comment or praise on a job well done. I find the people of upstate New York to be extra kind and caring, and I love going back home to visit from my new home in Seattle.

This past Christmas I was visiting my family in Tupper Lake and spent the day over in Lake Placid on Christmas Eve. On the way home, we stopped at the Nice 'n' Easy on Lake Flower Avenue, Saranac Lake, to get gas and pick up some subs. When I went into the restroom, I hung up my handbag and then accidentally left it behind. We continued on our way, and it wasn't until we were almost in Tupper Lake that I realized I didn't have it.

Right away we tried to call the gas station, but as most of you know, cell coverage is spotty on that stretch of road. I kept trying and trying to reach them but couldn't get through. My husband was not too happy with me; my iPhone, checkbook, cash, credit cards, etc., were all in there. But it was Christmas Eve, I reminded him, and this was Saranac Lake.

When we finally could contact the store, they were so relieved I had called. They had been trying to reach me as well, but I had a lock on my phone. When we made it back to the gas station and I talked to the ladies there, I was just overwhelmed by how nice they were and how hard they had been trying to contact me. Lori Dushaine and Norma Rock are the most wonderful ladies. One of them had found my bag right away, and the two of them had been trying to figure out who I was and how best to reach me. They apologized for looking into my handbag but were able to find my phone number in Seattle and left me a message there; they were very concerned I didn't leave the Adirondacks without it!

If you're over that way, stop in at the Nice 'n' Easy and tell these ladies how terrific they are. I am embarrassed it took me so long to tell them that myself!
