LAKE PLACID - Two Lake Placid residents allegedly raked in more than $2,000 in welfare funds they weren't entitled to.

The Essex County Department of Social Services Welfare Fraud Unit said in a press release that the Essex County Sheriff's Office served criminal summons to Gregg Staves, 37, and Gwendolyn Staves, 41, on March 2. Both are charged with committing fourth-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, both class E felonies.

The Staves allegedly "failed to report employment and wages to the Department of Social Services." The two received a total of $2,140.75 in benefits "to which they were not entitled," the press release said.

Both individuals are scheduled to appear in Elizabethtown town court before Judge William Garrison on March 21.
