Susan J. Sears Baker, 61, of High Street, Athol, passed away at Glens Falls Hospital Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2013, following a long illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Susan was born Dec. 12, 1951, at Lake Placid Memorial Hospital, daughter of the late Dexter Sears and her mother Gertrude Sears of Lake Placid.

Susan graduated from Lake Placid High School. Before her marriage she was employed by BOCES in Saranac Lake for 10 years. After her marriage to Edwin J. Baker Jr. in Dec. 27, 1986, she established her home in Athol till her untimely death.

In Athol, she was employed by the town of Thurman in the summer youth program. She was the founder of the "Mommie and Me" preschool program also of Thurman and for many years she donated her time with the youth commission. Many of her accomplishments included the Christmas Memory Tree in memory of passed loved ones.

Also, she was appointed as an assistant to the Thurman Town Clerk and substituted as bookkeeper for the supervisor. Many years she worked with the Thurman EMS as treasurer and making numerous ambulance calls.

Her hobbies included garage sales and bingo. She was a fine pool player, family trips and enjoyed watching planes come in and out of Albany Airport. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family.

Susan is survived by her loving husband Edwin J. "E. J." Baker Jr. of 26 years; a son, Dexter J. Baker of Athol; her mother, Gertrude Sears of Lake Placid; three sisters: Lynda Desourdy and her husband Kenneth, Peggy Brockway and her husband Larry, and Deborah Whitney and her husband Barry, all of Lake Placid; her aunt, Lynda Vassar and her husband Reed of Tennessee; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Susan's family wishes a large thank-you to those that helped during her last two years of illness.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home on Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, her uncle James Baker Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the North Elba Cemetery.
