Caravan of Thieves play Saturday at the Waterhole

February 21, 2013
By the Enterprise staff , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

SARANAC LAKE - Caravan of Thieves is a little off the wall - at least, that's what they'd have you think.

Maybe this jumping Gypsy-folk-pop band from Bridgeport, Conn., goes home and reverts to nice, quiet alter egos as librarians or chiropractors' receptionists. It doesn't sound like it, though.

Here's their stock self-description: "If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton's house, Caravan of Thieves would be the band they hired."

They will perform Saturday night at the Waterhole, with local swing-jazz sextet Crackin' Foxy opening up at 10 p.m. There's an $8 cover charge.

Caravan of Thieves is gallivanting around the country in support of its third album "The Funhouse," recorded at its hometown Tarquin Recording Studios, where such acts as The Swell Season, Interpol and The National have laid down tracks.

The group began with married couple Fuzz and Carrie Sangiovanni, who added violinist Ben Dean and upright bass player Brian Anderson in 2008.

Fact Box

If you go ...

---

Who: Caravan of Thieves, with Crackin' Foxy

When: 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23

Where: The Waterhole, 48 Main St., Saranac Lake

How much: $8

"It started as a romantic, bohemian vision of a couple making music, performing on the road, in parks, venues, traveling around and avoiding responsibility as much as possible," Fuzz said on the group's Facebook page.

A 2012 Kickstarter video, which helped raise money for studio time, shows the Caravaners awash in full-on zaniness: First they beg for pity, posing as hobos around a trash-can fire. Then they grin for the camera in extreme close-up, saying, "Bottom line is, we love you!" And then they whip out knives, an electric razor and a banana adding, "Now give us the money!"
