PAUL SMITHS - One person was arrested over the weekend for his role in an alleged assault at Paul Smith's College.

Ray Brook-based state police charged William J. Gabbeitt, 23, of Burlington, Vt., with two counts of third-degree assault with intent to cause physical injury, a class A misdemeanor, at 2:47 a.m. Saturday. Police said the charges stem from an incident that was reported to police by the Paul Smith's College Campus Safety Office at 11:34 a.m. Friday.

Police said an unnamed man went to a campus dormitory to pick up his girlfriend, but the building was locked. While he waited, police said three other men came outside, and a verbal dispute ensued. One of the men allegedly punched the victim in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the ground. Police said he was then kicked in the head.

The victim suffered bruises and scrapes on the face, and a small cut to the top of his head, police said.

Gabbeitt was the only person charged in connection with the alleged assault. It couldn't be immediately determined whether he is a student at the college.

He was taken to the state police barracks in Ray Brook, where he was formally charged. He was then arraigned in Brighton town court and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in Malone in lieu of $500 cash bail. Jail officials said this morning that bail was posted Saturday and Gabbeitt was released.
