SARANAC LAKE - A water main break shut down part of downtown Friday night.

The break happened sometime before 5 p.m. in front of Community Bank on Broadway. Village Department of Public Works crews were still working to repair it at 9 o'clock and were expected to remain on the scene well into the night.

The incident kept police and firefighters busy directing traffic as the water flooded parts of Broadway and Dorsey Street. Several businesses in the area reported that several feet of water had flooded their basements.

"We've got everybody on board," village Mayor Clyde Rabideau said. "This is very significant. It's a big break."

The mayor said it was too soon to say what caused the break or how long it would take to repair.

"We're still in the beginning stages," Rabideau said. "I'm just very pleased that we had so many of our people respond on a Friday night in the middle of winter. All hands are on deck."
