With more than 150 inches of snowfall each year, Franklin County is the natural choice for all winter activities. Bring the family skiing at one of our mountain ski resorts or cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile through spruce and pine-lined forests. Ice fishing is popular on our many frozen lakes, and numerous winter events are scheduled, such as annual winter carnivals in Malone and Saranac Lake. Explore spectacular lake and mountain views.
A challenging network of cross-country ski trails can be found in Malone, Paul Smiths, Lake Clear, Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake. Hundreds of miles of serene wilderness are available to the skier. Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake has lighted trails for night skiing as well. Rentals, lessons and guided tours are always available.
With the first snowfall, skiers flock to Titus Mountain, where there are trails for every caliber skier, as well as night skiing and affordable ski packages. Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake has an excellent family slope offering well-groomed trails for beginners and intermediate skiers. The Big Tupper Ski Area is open again in the community of Tupper Lake (www.skibigtupper.org). And visit Titus Mountain Ski Area near Malone (www.titusmountain.com).
Spend the morning in a heated shanty on one of several frozen lakes in the area and catch your dinner. Experienced guides can show you the ice fishing hot spots.
With miles of groomed trails, Franklin County has everything a snowmobiler needs. You'll find a range of trails that wind through open snowfields and balsam and spruce-lined forests.
