LAKE PLACID - Loretta Smith, 92, of Lake Placid, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Uihlein Living Center in Lake Placid.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Lyon Mountain, the daughter of Nelson and Rose (Prespare) Charland. She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Smith, in 1975.

She had worked for 33 years at Placid Memorial Hospital, Lake Placid, as manager in the Laundry Department. She loved playing Scat with her grandchildren. She volunteered her time at Placid Memorial Hospital and St. Agnes Church, helped deliver Meals on Wheels, and would help anybody who would ask her to sell fundraising tickets or any other good cause.

She is survived by three sons: Nelson Smith and his wife Kathy of Poland, N.Y., Philip Smith and his wife Francine of Tupper Lake, and Ellis Smith of Lake Placid; one daughter, Beverly Martin of Jackson, N.J.; 11 grandchildren: Mark Smith, Steven Smith, Kristen Smith, Natalie Smith, David Smith, Marcy Smith, Scott Martin and his wife Debbie, David Martin and his wife Sarah, Lori Massimino and her husband Anthony, Amy Baldwin and her husband Randy, and Angie Cox and her husband Tim. She is also survived by one brother, Harold Charland of Lake Placid, and one sister, Ethel LaMere of Millerton, N.Y.; 11 great-grandchildren; four adopted great-grandchildren; four sisters in law: Joan Charland, Betty LaPoint, Gloria Charland, and Rose Charland; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; 12 siblings: Valeda Benjamin, Rose Kavanaugh, Evelyn Collins, Arnold Charland, Shirley Demaris, Ronnie Charland, Leon Charland, Leo Charland, Floyd Charland, Richard Charland, Henry Charland, and Willard Charland; and one son-in-law, Richard Martin.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home, Lake Placid.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Saranac Avenue, Lake Placid, with Father John Yonkovig officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in May.
