KENMORE - Joseph F. Thill, of Kenmore, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Elderwood Health Care at Wedgewood, in Amherst. He was 84.
Mr. Thill was born March 20, 1928, to Loretta (nee Farrell) and Joseph Frederick Thill and raised in the North Park neighborhood of Buffalo. He was a 1945 graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and a 1948 graduate of Canisius College. He worked as a social worker and an officer for the New York State Probation Office before beginning a 28-year career as a counselor/supervisor with New York State Vocational and Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities in 1963.
Mr. Thill was active in the Buffalo Ornithological Society and a lifelong student of natural history. He collected and catalogued 2,300 ants, wasps and spiders from Western New York, Southern Ontario and the Adirondacks.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen (nee Murty); two sons: John, of Buffalo, and Joseph and his wife Nathalie (nee Costa), of Lake Clear; a daughter, Mary and her husband Mark Wilson, of Saranac Lake; two grandchildren: Simon and Lucy Thill, of Lake Clear; a sister, Joanne Gelston, of Rogers, Ark.; nieces, nephews, and many good friends.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at D. Lawrence Ginnane Funeral Home, 3215 Delaware Ave., in Kenmore. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Timothy's Church, 565 East Park Drive, in Tonawanda; burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna.
