Vermont sweeps St. Lawrence Carnival

WILMINGTON - The University of Vermont alpine ski team captured the team championship at the two-day St. Lawrence Carnival held over the weekend at Whiteface Mountain.

The Catamounts racked up 1,013 points to outscore Dartmouth (789) and University of New Hampshire (748). St. Lawrence finished seventh.

UVM dominated the women's slalom event on Saturday, with Elli Terwiel taking first with a total time of 1:27.44, Kristina Riis-Johannessen (1:29.20) in second and Kate Ryley (1:29.58) in fourth. Lizzie Kistler of Dartmouth placed third in 1:29.35.

Ryley placed first in Friday's giant slalom with a two-run time of 2:03.41, while Riis-Johannessen was second in 2:03.76 and Terwiel was third in 2:03.93.

David Donaldson of Middlebury College won both the giant slalom and slalom. He won the men's slalom with a two-run time of 1:21.98, followed by UVM's Travis Dawson (1:22.85) and Coley Oliver (1:23.04).

Jonathan Nordbotten placed second in the giant slalom with a total time of 1:59.30 and Andrew McNealus was third in 1:59.57.

U16 Cup at Whiteface

New York Ski Educational Foundation hosted the U16 Cup giant slalom and slalom races at Whiteface Mountain on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Cecily Decker of Saranac Lake won the giant slalom competition after recording a 54.96-second first run and 52.66 in her second for a total time of 1:47.62. Her sister Sheila Decker placed third in the event with a total time of 1:56.46.

Whiteface skiers dominated the slalom top five, with Beatrix Lever (1:28.99) taking first, Sheila Decker (1:34.32) in fourth and Jillian Barile (1:35.78) in fifth. Megan Bright of National Sports Academy was second in 1:33.80.

Ben Meyer of National Sports Academy won the giant slalom with a two-run time of 1:51.83. Whiteface skier Dillon Smith was fifth in 1:53.85.

Jonathan Yudell won the slalom with a total time of 1:31.91. Alex Akoundi was NSA's top finisher in the event with a time of 1:39.89.
