LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls hockey team broke open a tie game with two big goals in the third period to claim a 3-1 victory over Salmon River Monday at the Olympic Center.

A team with just one win this season, Salmon River threw a scare into the Blue Bombers when Molly Brockway scored early in the third period to deadlock the contest at 1-1.

The Blue Bombers answered with two quick goals, as Emily Godin sent home the go-ahead goal just 40 seconds later and Carissa Kennedy added an insurance goal with 6:31 left on the clock.

"We outshot them in all three periods but we had trouble getting to the rebounds," Lake Placid head coach Sandy Huber said. "They made us a little nervous when they tied it up, and I really liked how our girls responded. We came up with two really nice goals."

After a scoreless first period, Brooke Reid gave Lake Placid a 1-0 edge 1:58 into the second stanza when she beat Shamrocks goalie Ally Grant with a high wrist shot on the short side of the net after taking a feed along the left boards from Samantha Barney. It was the lone goal of the second period and the sixth of the season for Reid, a senior Blue Bombers captain.

Huber said during the team's locker-room talk between the first and second periods, she told her players to take shots that were low. She explained that if they took a high shot in the game and didn't bury it, they would have to skate a "Herbie" in practice, which is an endurance drill named after 1980 United States Olympic coach Herb Brooks. Huber said with a grin after the win that since Reid top-shelved the shot to put the Blue Bombers on the board, her senior captain saved herself from that fate.

Trailing 1-0, Brockway got Salmon River back in the game when she stole a puck near her team's blue line from a Lake Placid player, broke in alone into the Blue Bombers zone and beat goaltender Tanner Stanton to knot the contest 5:10 into the third period.

Godin then converted a Salmon River turnover into what proved to be the game-winner. On the play, the junior forward picked up the puck along the left boards, raced to the net and scored on a breakaway for a 2-1 Blue Bombers lead with 5:50 gone in the third.

Lake Placid then took advantage of a power-play for its third goal, with Kennedy sending a low slapshot from the point into the net past a screened Grant to lift her team into a 3-1 lead with 6:31 remaining. Payton Barney and Morgan Meyer earned assists on the goal.

"Coach said to keep the shots low, and it wasn't an inch off the ice," Kennedy said, describing her fourth goal of the season.

The Blue Bombers outshot the Shamrocks 20-8. Stanton stopped seven shots to earn the win while Grant made 17 saves for Salmon River. The Shamrocks fell to 1-10-1 with the setback and Lake Placid improved to 8-3-2 with the victory.

"Depth is our weakness this season," said Salmon River head coach Samantha Phillips, whose Shamrocks had just enough players to skate two forward lines. "We played pretty well, we just had a couple of defensive breakdowns that cost us. It's easier to make mistakes when you get fatigued and that's kind of how it's been for us this year."

The Shamrocks, who fell to 1-10-1, will be back in the Tri-Lakes again Wednesday when they visit Saranac Lake, with the opening faceoff slated for 4 p.m. at the Civic Center. Lake Placid will have a tough test in its next start, which will be on the road Wednesday against defending state champion Potsdam.
