A 2009 Lake Placid High School graduate who's serving in the U.S. Navy was recently recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Alec Thomas, a Gas Turbine Systems Technician Third Class, was awarded the Navy and Marine Commendation Medal for his service aboard the USS Fitzgerald from March to August 2012, while stationed in Yokosuka, Japan.

The award commends Thomas for working 150 off-duty hours to prepare the ship for Damage Control Certification, Light Off Assessment, EOC and Aegis Light Off 2012.

"Petty Officer Thomas's proffessionalism and devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service," the commendation reads.

Thomas joined the Navy in August 2009. He is the son of Ron and Amy Thomas of Bloomingdale. His grandparents are Ron and Josie Thomas of Bloomingdale and Jacques and Alice DeMattos of Saranac Lake and Clearwater, Fla.
