LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Olympic Speed Skating Oval hosted the Charles Jewtraw All Around race Saturday and Sunday, as part of its ongoing racing series. The event is named after Lake Placid native and 1924 Olympic speed skating gold medalist Charles Jewtraw.

An All Around meet is particularly challenging because it requires competitors to race in both sprint and long distances. The event included 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000-meter races, with the top point scorers winning the overall trophy.

Several members of the Lake Placid Speed Skating Club competed, including Patrick Kelly, Carol Moore, Greta Stahl and its newest member Mike Richter. Best known for his Stanley Cup-winning hockey career, Richter is new to the sport, and enjoyed his first speed skating meet in Lake Placid.

"It was a fantastic weekend with great people and perfect conditions," Richter said. "Speed skating is an amazing sport, and there's no better place to speed skate than Lake Placid."

Like past events, skaters of all ages from throughout the U.S. and Canada participated. Both overall winners of the event live and train in Lake Placid - Patrick Kelly won the men's title, while Esther Munoz was the overall winner in the women's category.

The next race of the season will be the Empire State Games speed skating events Feb. 7-10, followed by the Lake Placid All Around Championships Feb. 15-16.
