SARANAC LAKE - The village is applying for a $25,000 grant to help further grow the arts community in Saranac Lake.

Community Development Director Jeremy Evans said at Thursday night's village board meeting that the village is partnering with Pendragon Theatre on an application to the Our Town grant program through the National Endowment for the Arts.

"I think we're going to seek $25,000 to help strengthen Saranac Lake ArtWorks as an organization, develop a strategic plan for the village as a center for the arts, do some baseline assessment of the arts as an important component of our economy, and also figure out some initiatives as a community that we can do to take the arts community to the next level," Evans said.

The board unanimously approved a resolution to submit the grant application. It also authorizes the Community Development Department to administer the grant and contribute up to $5,000 of in-kind professional services to the project.

The Our Town grant program is for "creative placemaking projects that contribute to the livability of communities and place the arts at their core," according to the NEA website. Grant amounts between $25,000 and $200,000 can be requested.

The application deadline is Jan. 14, 2013.
