FC bed tax hearings set

December 22, 2012
By JESSICA COLLIER , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

MALONE - Franklin County legislators set three hearings to collect public input on the institution of a 5 percent tax on stays in hotels, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals.

The first hearing will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in Tupper Lake at the village offices, 53 Park St.

The second will be the same night at 7 p.m. at the Harrietstown Town Hall on Main Street in Saranac Lake.

A third hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in Malone at the Franklin County Courthouse at 155 W. Main St.

The county normally holds hearings just in Malone, or in Malone and Saranac Lake for the annual budget hearing. But legislators decided that since the aim is to gather input from the people who would be most affected by the tax, there should be one in Tupper Lake as well, since that town is trying to shift its economic focus to tourism.

The county is looking to approve the tax and send it to the state for approval by the end of January.
