SARANAC LAKE - At least for one night, Kevin Morgan, Kellen Munn and Teddy Yanchitis could be called the "Terrific Trio."
On Thursday, the three seniors each scored 20 or more points to lead the Saranac Lake boys to their first basketball victory, a 66-54 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference triumph over visiting Ticonderoga.
Yanchitis led the way with a game-high 23 points, Munn tossed in 21 and Morgan chipped in 20. The trio accounted for all but two of Saranac Lake's points, with the rest coming on a field goal from junior guard Carl Bevilaqua.
"I think we caught Ticoderoga off guard," said Saranac Lake's Dermott Morgan, who picked up his first victory as a varsity basketball coach. "We ran a nice high-post offense, and Kellen and Teddy just broke then down. If these three guys show up like this, we'd be tough to beat."
Munn was on fire out of the gate, scoring 14 points in the opening quarter as Saranac Lake jumped ahead 22-17. The Red Storm then upped their advantage to 36-24 at halftime.
Yanchitis then came up big in the third period with 10 points as Saranac Lake held a 55-44 edge. The Red Storm closed out the game, outscoring the Sentinels 11-10 in the final quarter.
At one time in the second half, Saranac Lake's biggest lead of the game was 16 points.
Anthony Dushane paced the Sentinels with 18 points, and Ty Denno chipped in 16 in the loss. Mike Graney also scored in double figures for Ticonderoga, finishing with 13 points.
Although he didn't get any point production from most of his players, Morgan singled out the efforts of guards Bevilaqua, TJ Monroe, Jon Lester and Devin Cowan.
"They didn't score points, but they did a good job taking care of the ball and getting entry passes into our big guys."
With the win, Saranac Lake improved to 1-4 and next play a strong Beekmantown squad at home on Thursday, Jan. 3.
